On Sunday night, April 10, 2016, Northeastern University’s premier a cappella group, The Nor’easters performed for the last time with this lineup. Seniors are graduating and moving on, making way for new members for the 2016/2017 school year. It’s a bittersweet moment for everyone in the group and they took this night to make the most of their last hours all together.

This Spring Concert was called “Across the Pond” in regards to one of the special guest groups, the award-winning All the King’s Men from King’s College London. One of Boston University’s best groups, The Treblemakers, as well as Northeastern’s all female group, Pitch, Please! rounded out the entertainment.

The Nor’easters often perform at the Blackman Auditorium, Northeastern University’s theater that holds nearly 1,000 guests. It’s an awesome venue for live a cappella, especially when The Vocal Company is brought in to provide sound and lighting.

The show was one of my favorite a cappella events, as sound was top notch—almost no glitches—and all the groups seemed at the very top of their game.

The Nor’easters performed three sets that included wonderful leads from Carly Manfrini, Ryan Hannon, Anthony Rodriguez, Johanna Martendal, and Peter St. Lawrence, to name a few. The group also highlighted their graduating seniors Jessie Litwin, Isaac Willnow, and Jimmy George that included personal tributes from other members, video packages, and showcase songs featuring the seniors on lead vocals. This was the way to show the importance of each member both in terms of friendship and group contribution. Very well done, Nor’easters.

Both the Treblemakers and Pitch, Please! had great moments, but I was enthralled with All the King’s Men, which seemed to highlight socially conscious, all-inclusive, equality lyrics. The group absolutely blew away Just Jack’s “Embers” with a powerfully sung version that repeated the philosophical thought, “We are all embers from the same fire.” Go out of your way to see these young men perform!
