I’m building a new computer to replace one that I built in 2002. The old computer has an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor and an ATI All-in-Wonder video card. I had recently upgraded the RAM to 1.5 gigs. That computer will go downstairs into the living room and interface with my 32″ standard definition TV and cable box. I’ll use it to play classic arcade games via MAME and a HotRodSE two player arcade controller, and to watch and listen to internet downloads. I might also record some cable shows and burn them to DVD. I’m envisioning retiring my standalone DVD player and DVD burner and using the computer for all that.

I’m building a system from parts ordered from Newegg.com. It’s a modest system by today’s standards, but it’s a huge step up from my old computer. The total cost after rebates will be around $500. This will run XP and will connect to my current NEC 19″ CRT monitor. Here is a list of the components:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
